Plate Tectonics: The geologic theory which proposes that the Earth’s crust is divide into several “plates” that interact in various ways to produce most of our volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountains.  In addition, movement of continents brings them into different climate zones, thus driving much of organic evolution.

Mass Extinctions:   These are disastrous events driven by some climate changes, astronomical processes, and/or volcanic activities, during which large percentages of species become extinct.  There have been six major extinctions in the past 500 million years, the sixth one is ongoing.

Local Geology: The rocks underlying the Nashville-Gallatin area consist of fossiliferous Ordovician and Silurian aged limestones and shales, separated by an unconformity which was the result of a major glaciation in the southern hemisphere.
