Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technicians are vital members of health care teams. They perform diagnostic tests—EKGs (also known as ECG’s) --that are instrumental in helping doctors identify cardiovascular problems in patients. EKGs may reveal irregularities in the heart that help doctors provide appropriate care and treatment. EKG technicians provide patient education to individuals by explaining steps involved with the procedure prior to administering the exam. They also monitor heart performance during the exam.
EKG Technicians work in hospitals, physician practices, urgent care offices and long-term care facilities.
Students will learn:
- anatomy and physiology
- musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, lymphatic, and immune systems
- how to identify cardiac rhythms
- medical terminology and equipment operation
Classroom/Laboratory-ten weeks, 60 hours
Clinical Rotation-two weeks, 80 hours
The clinical rotation is a mandatory component of the course and will span two weeks. This rotation will not be scheduled until all required documentation-including background check, drug screening, and immunizations records-has been submitted by due date, and successful completion of all coursework and laboratory activities.
Upon successful completion of all coursework, laboratory activities and clinical externship requirements, students will sit for the proctored National HealthCareer Association (NHA) certification exam, conducted at Volunteer State Community College.
